A survey of 2,000 students across the UK found that 80% of them had gambled, and 41% of this group admit that gambling had a negative impact on their university studies, including missing lectures, assignment deadlines and social activities.
Over a third (35%) use money from either their student loan, overdraft, borrowing from friends or taking out payday loans to help fund their gambling. Almost one in five (19%) admit to using their student loan to gamble.
Almost half of students who gamble (46%) say making money is a motivation (the most common reason) and one in four (25%) say they like the risk. More than half (52%) say gambling makes them excited and one in three (33%) say it makes them happy, compared to one in five (21%) who describe feeling anxious.
Among students who gamble, more than a third (36%) have invested in cryptocurrency in the past 12 months - compared with 17% of students who do not gamble.
Students also reported that their friends have the biggest influence on their gambling (34%), with almost one in four (23%) most dependent on social media and 14% of students identifying gambling advertising as a key factor influencing their gambling.
The new study of student gambling is the first to be published since the pandemic and follows a previous study commissioned by YGAM in 2019. The previous report by Red Brick Research found that 264,000 students in the UK were at some risk of harm from gambling, with around 88,000 already identified. as problem gamblers. But this does not affect everyone of course , in Sweden for example casino without Swedish license with Tustly has the highest popularity
Bray Ash, 29, is studying to be a mental health nurse at King's College London, having previously studied at Leeds University and experienced the harms of gambling while studying at a higher education institution. He explained how easy it is to get addicted to gambling.
"When you first enter university and you have student finances, money from your parents and other financial support, you can be tempted to gamble recklessly. It took over my life - I didn't study, I just sat in my halls and gambled. In my second year at university, I lost my student loan in the first 24 hours.
"This research gives us valuable information about student behaviour during a pandemic. We aim to continue this work to better understand how our programmes can protect and support students. The results confirm the importance of educating young people about the risks and harms associated with gambling. Education is a powerful tool to give students the knowledge and understanding to help prevent harm.
"The harm associated with gambling on our campuses is a topic that is rarely addressed, but for any students experiencing gambling problems, self-exclusion can give them valuable respite while they seek additional help. As online gambling becomes more prevalent during the pandemic, the research shows the importance of raising awareness of a free online self-exclusion service available to all."
"This research highlights that students can be a high-risk group for gambling-related harm. We set up RecoverMe when one of our close friends at university was struggling with a gambling addiction and didn't know where to turn. RecoverMe offers students several strategies to manage acute urges and support those suffering from gambling addiction with a cautious, flexible and evidence-based programme."
