There is no doubt that money is a central aspect of our world. It can influence our lives in various ways and is not infrequently used as an indicator of prosperity and happiness.
But does this classification really make sense? Does money really make us happy? Does the story of blissful Uncle Scrooge, bathing in the gold coins of his money bin, actually contain a grain of truth?
These questions are not only addressed by many people in their private lives, but also by science. There are countless studies from happiness research that explore the connection between money and happiness. The results are sometimes plausible and often simply astonishing.
As you can see, Denmark comes out on top in terms of happiness, although Luxembourg has a significantly higher median income. This shows very clearly that a higher income does, in principle, bring greater satisfaction. But the exceptions confirm the assumption that there are certainly other factors that are decisive for people's happiness.
Our income does indeed seem to influence our happiness - but only within certain limits. This was also determined by the U.S. economist Richard Easterlin in his happiness studies conducted in the U.S. between 1946 and 1970.
According to these studies, the population did not feel any happier about their lives than before, despite significant increases in income. Many scientists therefore concluded that income and money contribute to an increased feeling of happiness only up to a certain level.
This is also supported by a study by psychologist and Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman and his colleague Angus Deaton from Princeton University.
After evaluating more than 450,000 questionnaires on the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, the researchers concluded that the average U.S. citizen reaches his or her optimum level of happiness at an annual income of about $75,000 (about 58,000 euros). Larger increases in income beyond this limit, on the other hand, hardly influence happiness at all. Furthermore, health or loneliness in everyday life are significantly stronger influencing factors on our happiness.
If starting from a certain level more money does not increase the luck feeling further, forces itself however the question, why nevertheless also many rich humans strive for ever more money. A first clue was found already in his time by the economist Easterlin. In his research, he discovered that relative income for traders in exness forex is often more important than absolute income. According to this, money primarily brings prestige and it is an inner need for us to measure ourselves against others in terms of our income and wealth.
So even a 5% salary increase can tend to make us unhappy if our neighbor gets an 8% increase. This phenomenon is now supported by evaluations of the socio-economic panel (SOEP) of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW). According to economist Jürgen Schupp, men in particular are very oriented toward their social environment. In other words, they derive happiness from owning more than other people in their environment.
