In the beginning there was powder. When Somat launched the first dishwasher powder in the 1960s, it was a revolution that changed dishwashing forever. Today, most consumers tend to rely on the conveniently pre-measured tabs. But which is actually the better cleaner? Does the dishwasher wash better with tabs or powder? Well, it's not necessarily possible to generalize. Since dishwasher tabs are the more popular dishwashing detergents, the largest product selection can be found in this category. But there is also something to be said for the classic powder, because it can be dosed individually. Here you can find out which cleaner is the best choice for your requirements.
What goes in your dishwasher: tabs or powder? If you're the tabs type, you're going with the crowd of dishwasher owners. It's no wonder, because tabs are easy to use, effective, and available with many different focuses of action. Heavy soiling, burnt-on food, glasses, metal - Somat has the perfectly dosed cleaner for every requirement and every degree of soiling. Here is a brief overview:
So, do you prefer the innovative tabs or the classic powder for the dishwasher? In any case, Somat tabs are unbeatable in terms of versatility. Under normal conditions, they deliver consistently excellent cleaning quality and are deadly safe to use: simply place a tab in the dishwasher's detergent compartment - and you're done. Since the salt and rinse aid functions are already integrated in all tabs - except Somat Classic - you don't need to add anything extra.
What is very convenient, however, may not be optimal under certain conditions. For example, if the water is very hard (over 21° German hardness / dH), the tabs may not be able to compensate for this with the composition of their ingredients. This can limit the cleaning power and lead to lime deposits. An additional dosage of special salt or rinse aid is then necessary.
So whether it is better to use tabs or powder in your dishwasher also depends on the external conditions. Although you can always top up salt and rinse aid even with tabs, for many this is not flexible enough.
Before the introduction of tabs in the 1990s, dishwasher powder was the standard product. It has the same cleaning properties as tabs, but in bulk form it is more flexible to dose. In addition, rinse aid and special salt are not integrated. This gives you the option of dosing the ideal amount of cleaner, rinse aid and special salt for the hardness of your water. You can find out the degree of hardness from your local drinking water supplier. By the way: Hard water is richer in minerals than soft water and is therefore considered healthier.
So if you prefer to dose your dishwasher cleaner in the classic way, our Somat Classic powder is the right choice for you. Put the powder in the same compartment as the tabs. For dosing, use a measuring cup or dosing spoon and dose the amount of powder indicated on the package for your water hardness. Special salt and rinse aid are also added according to your water hardness.
