A cargo ship is the primary means of international transportation of goods. Consequently, it is the most widely used mode of transportation because of the ease of transporting materials and low cost. Most ships sailing the world's oceans are cargo ships.
Each type of load requires special handling. Consequently, the ship that carries it must adapt to them. This necessarily forces carriers to specialize in moving one type of cargo.
A general cargo ship is a basic vessel that can carry palletized and packaged cargo. They are small in size compared to other vessels such as container ships; which can carry the same type of goods. They have their own cranes that are used for loading and unloading at ports.
Among the products they carry are food, chemicals, shoes, clothing, furniture and others.
Container ships are a type of vessel designed for use in international shipping. They move cargo in containers with standard measures according to ISO standards; the most popular is the 20-footer. In addition, due to its popularity, this method is highly automated, and loading and unloading is done with the help of portal cranes.
They can carry any dry cargo in the containerization process.
As the name implies, oil tankers are tankers for transporting crude oil and its derivatives.
They are basically large shipping tanks capable of carrying up to 2 million barrels. They can also be adapted to handle any liquid cargo.
Bulk carriers can carry any kind of bulk cargo such as grains, cereals, cement, and minerals. They have large storage facilities as well as bucket cranes.
These ships carry perishable goods that require temperature-controlled transportation. Like bulk carriers, they are built with various large storage facilities.
This applies to such products as fruit, vegetables and meat.
Ro-Ro ships are specifically designed to carry all types of wheeled equipment. This includes industrial vehicles as well as trucks that can carry their own cargo.
Likewise, they are designed with platforms for moving vehicles as well as for moving them inside the boat without inconvenience.
Finally, multi-purpose vessels are designed to combine all of the above features. That is, they are hybrids that can carry, for example, containers and bulk cargo.
Then there are hybrids which transport wheeled machinery, passengers, or containers.
