Master of the game and near-game shocking. Tom Dwan in world poker can be compared with Sergey Zverev on the Russian stage. On the one hand - a star and a clear talent, on the other - there are signs of luck and "shock for the sake of shock." If the status of Phil Ivey or Gus Hansen is not in doubt even among their detractors, then Tom's poker level is the subject of fierce discussion. Given the constant confirmation of his "non-traditional" - and in game tactics, and in the manner of dressing / communicating, and even in sexual orientation - the degree of these disputes simply rolls over (see it here).
The widest range of opinions in the poker community regarding Durrrr's figure ranges from "the best online poker player of the 21st century" to "the fattest fish on the poker Olympus". How fitting is Tom Dwan's pink fruit hat crown as a symbol of the American dream coming true? It was in this form that he landed (no other way to say!) On his first WPT tournament. Let's try to figure it out.
A boy from a middle-class family (by the standards of the prosperous northeastern states of New England), in 2004 he enters the University of Boston ... which he drops out in the same year. Having started playing online poker at the age of 17, the young talent had only $50 received from his father. By the end of the year, that amount had risen to $15,000, and the stakes had gone from $1/2 baby to $500/1000. Quite surprising is Dwan's style of play - he rarely folds preflop at all. Pressure on opponents comes with any cards - and they either fold or the flop is revealed.
Due to US law, Durrrr was banned from playing live poker tournaments until 2008 (until he turns 21). The situation was paradoxical - the man played on equal terms with Benjamin, Ivey and Antonius in online poker services, at the highest limits - and he could only play offline in Europe. Dwan finished 12th at his first live event (EPT London 2005) and fourth at the 2007 World Poker Tour Finals for $324,000. But the main year for Tom Dwan was 2008.
Since January 2008, having reached the age of majority, Durrrr breaks into the operational space of offline poker. Second place at the "WPT Borgata Winter Open" and "Aussie Millions", seventh at the "World Championship Mixed Event" $10,000 and eighth at the "No-Limit 2-7 Draw" $5,000. It's rare for an online face to face poker player to achieve that much in just a few months. He was even nominated for the Poker Hall of Fame the following year - just in 2009, the nomination procedure changed, and the online community was able to nominate its own candidate. And online, Durrrr was extremely popular. The last two years of poker have somewhat cooled the ardor of the most ardent fans of Tom Dwan. First, he didn't get close to any of the WSOP bracelets, making it all the way to the final tables. Secondly, fifth place in the HORSE tournament ($10,000 buy-in) and ninth place in the Event Heads-Up ($25,000 buy-in) are far from his own “Napoleonic plans”. Thirdly, he lost several large bets for 2010, concluded on the condition of winning at least one "bracelet" tournament.
The coming years will make it clear who Tom Dwan really is - an overrated young talent or a real poker talent. He himself has no doubts about the latter - he lives in his own house with a partner (whom the paparazzi call Tom's boyfriend) D. Benefield, rolls on a Lamborghini and generally demonstrates absolute confidence in material well-being. His participation in poker shows has already become legendary. Take on Phil Ivey over a million dollars at High Stakes Poker as the African American's icy invincibility gave way to Durrrr's buffoonery! Only this young man is capable of playing any hand, like a monstrous pair, and even with constant podnakavaniya of opponents, regardless of the limits and the level of the opponent. So in poker for Tom Dwan there are only two ways that the ancient Spartans talked about - either “with a shield” (that is, with WSOP bracelets and multi-million dollar prizes) or “on the shield” - that is, playing until the last dollar ...
Interesting episodes from the biography of Tom Dwan:
• His appearance at the London tournament in 2005 simply shocked the "venerable public" - taking advantage of the absence of a formal ban, Dwan appeared at the table in carnival costumes imitating skittles and the king of the plant world. One day, he took a pink flamingo with him, explaining that he greatly appreciated the work of the 19th-century English writer Lewis Carroll (there is an episode with pink flamingos as game attributes in the textbook fairy tale Alice in Wonderland).
• Considers his nickname (Durrrr) and avatar (@) as methods of psychological pressure on opponents
• The famous "Tom Dwan Challenges" - betting on long draws with a handicap for opponents - calls it not an image element, but a forced measure "Just in 2008, few people wanted to play poker with me ..."
